We are about to start beta testing of Wizcode Defragment Mobile - our brand new and improved Defragmenter for Windows Mobile. Before we enable sign-up for this beta, are there any feature requests that you would like us to implement?

Looking forward to your feedback!

1.  If at all possible please incorporate the ability to navigate via d-pad.
2.  Please incorporate cpu priority controls, you know like pocketplayer they allow you to select normal, High, Highest, and Extreme.
3.  A warning message instructing the user to disable any applications that might be installed on memory card about to be defragmented.  (I don’t think the memory card or Defragment mobile will be very happy if Pocketweather or Weatherpanel decide to add/change files while the card is being defragmented).
4.  An automatic update feature that informs the user a new update is available for download.

Sorry for being an extremely demanding customer.

1.  If at all possible please incorporate the ability to navigate via d-pad.

That will be done, all Evolution based products have WM5 soft key menus and support d-pad navigation.

2.  Please incorporate cpu priority controls, you know like pocketplayer they allow you to select normal, High, Highest, and Extreme.

What would the purpose of that be? Can you give me an example?

3.  A warning message instructing the user to disable any applications that might be installed on memory card about to be defragmented.  (I don’t think the memory card or Defragment mobile will be very happy if Pocketweather or Weatherpanel decide to add/change files while the card is being defragmented).

Actually the latest code disables access to storage cards so that no other application can modify the file system while the volume is being processed. This code is already present in Data Recovery Mobile.

4.  An automatic update feature that informs the user a new update is available for download.

This is in our to-do list. We are even thinking of a more specialized tool that will enumerate the installed applications on the device and will check if there are updates for any of them. That will require some cooperation from other developers but I am sure it is achievable.

Sorry for being an extremely demanding customer.

I wish we had more demanding customers. rasberry

After some thought I’ve realized that my request for cpu priority would be meaningless for any ppc because the speed of the defrag program is choked by the ppc’s memory card controlers.  So cpu priority isn’t as meaningful as it would be on a notebook.

i feel the to De-fragment my Mobile storage card would be an advantage i use it in the Pocket Mechanic Professional and find it cleans up defragmented sectors on my card as all seems to run a lot smoother after using it. so the Wizcode Defragment Mobile would be a great app to implement

daak you are correct - defragmentation is a must because:

1) You increase file performance. No matter if it is a hard drive or a flash card that contains no movable parts it is much faster to access contiguous data that non-contiguous. This can be proven with simple benchmarks and will shortly demonstrate it.

2) Data recovery won’t work well on a fragmented file system. Guaranteed. So it is safer to keep your data defragmented just for that reason alone.

3) Our new defragmenter sports a new feature - it is able to reorder directory entries inside a folder and sort the files alphabetically. If you open a folder with a large number of files in a file explorer for example the explorer will typically show the files sorted. If they are not sorted in the folder the application will loose some time sorting them in memory. This can take seconds and even more. If the files are sorted the file list will be loaded instantly. So many applications that operate on a large number of files will run smoother.

By the way, the new beta is out:

I downloaded this and installed it, but have yet to run it yet (since Scandisk found lost chains & clusters), so I didn’t want to try defraging until I ran the debug version of Scandisk.

So as a dumb question here (since I haven’t run it yet), isn’t the Mobile CPU kind of weak (read that as slow) to be doing defrag?  How long would you expect an 8GB Sandisk Extreme III card to take to defrag using an 624 MHZ mobile CPU?

If I am using Windows XP to do the defrag on my CF & SD cards, what benefit does this product give me?

Just figured I’d ask while this was still in Beta… I would think that others will be asking the same / similar questions, when it goes for sale.

It is difficult to give an estimate. Defragmentation time will depend on the number of fragmented cluster chains. But you can always start defragmentation, stop it in case it takes too long and then run it again to defragment the remaining part of the file system. The only important thing to have in mind here is that the defragmenter should be always stopped using the Stop button/menu. Killing it while it is defragmenting could introduce an error on the disk especially if the cache contents have not been synchronized yet.

I just got done running Defrag.  It said to see a report of the results click next (I think that is what it said).  I clicked on the close button, it went back to the CF Card Map, when I clicked on NEXT, I got an error message that said “An unsupported operation was attempted.” When I clicked on OK, it brought me back to the main screen of Defrag.

Ok, so after getting this error (see my previous posting), I was going to defrag my SD card.  I clicked on Check Card, and the screen that says Fragmentation Check Please Read shows up, I click on Don’t show this message again, then NEXT.I select SD Card, It reports back that it is 12% fragmented, I click on Close. It takes me to the map of the SD Card, when I click on NEXT, I get the error “An unsupported Operation was attempted.” I click on OK, and I am brought back to the Main Screen.  When I click on Check Card, I am brought back to the Fragmentation Check Please Read shows up (even though I clicked on Don’t show this message again.

My Trial Version is going to expire in 14 Days.  Is there any way that you can send me the Registration code?  I will wait to enter it until Defragment Mobile expires (to make sure that it works), but it would be nice to get the registration code.

We will be generating the new batches of license keys in the next few days. Sorry this took so long.
