Yesterday—after getting my T-mobile Wing just as I like it—I installed the Pocket Mechanic trial. Curiosity got the better of me and I ran it’s registry cleanup option. When it asked, “do you want to delete these entries?” like a fool and complete noob I clicked “yes.”

Now my voice command doesn’t function, with a popup that says “voice command has encountered a problem ....” I’m sure when I deleted the registry entries there were a bunch of “sapi” ones—voice command. Oops.

Anything I can do to restore it??

Hi Dooce,
Welcome to the forums!

Sorry to hear about that! Can you please tell me if you were using the latest version (2.92) of Pocket Mechanic? We haven’t had reports of issues with MS Voice Command so I will have to double check that. I will try to install MS Voice Command and reproduce the issue. Any additional information on reproducing the issue will be highly appreciated.

What was the version of Pocket Mechanic that caused that?

I have a WM5 Palm Treo 700wx.  I downloaded and installed Pocket Mechanic Professional 2.92.249 (WM5, ARM) from pocketgear.com this morning and did the same (registry cleanup, yes to the question about deleting bad entries).  Now my Voice Command does the same.  Please advise on how to correct the issue.

Hi Nathan,
This issue is resolved in the (still) unreleased new v2.94 of Pocket Mechanic. I will prepare a short post describing how to fix the issue and restore Voice Command back and will post it in 24 hours here.

Hello,
For more than a week all attempts to reproduce this issue were not successful. Can anybody who experienced it give us a clue for example was it the registry cleaner or the file system cleaner that caused the problem, what were approximately the module settings, when did the error message appear (after a soft reset, when the action button was pressed etc)? I look forward to your responses to help us deal with this annoying problem. Thanks!

I’ve since hard-reset my device and there is no way I’m going to try and reproduce it again as it is too much of a pain.  I didn’t run the file system cleaner, so it must be the registry cleaner.  I simply let it run its recommended/default options and didn’t choose anything special.  Voice command was turned on and assigned to the third button on the side of the device when I ran the cleaner.  I had soft-reset after running the registry cleaner and before attempting to use Voice Command.

Hi Nathan,
Running the registry cleaner with default/all options enabled and deleting the keys found does not seem to have any effect on the devices we have. I was wondering if you could backup your device, run Pocket Mechanic with log file enabled to reproduce the issue and email us the log file. In case you brake Voice Command again you should be able to restore from the backup. What is the device you are using? We are testing on HP 211 and HP hx4700 upgraded with WM6. Thanks!

As I stated in my original post, I have a WM5 Palm Treo 700wx.  The whole process started precisely because I attempted to restore from backup, which hosed the alarms.  I turned to PocketMechanic to try and restore functionality w/o a hard reset.  Now that I’ve had to do a hard-reset anyhow, I’m not going to do another backup and restore since I fully expect to end up in need of another hard reset.

My OS is v5.1.195(Build 14932.2.2.2)
My phone software version is (TREO700WX_-1.22-VZW)—this was the most recent update available for my device at palm.com as of a few weeks ago.  It sounds like you have not tried to reproduce it with this software and with Voice Command enabled and assigned to the side button before running PM.

I understand the frustration caused by this issue but the steps we need to take in order to resolve a reported issue is to first reproduce it reliably and then come up with a fix. So far we have not been able to reproduce the issue that is why I asked for assistance. If your system was messed up before you ran Pocket Mechanic that makes investigation even more tricky because a) The device might have been already corrupted before you ran Pocket Mechanic and b) The issue could be a combination of previous problems and something Pocket Mechanic did.

We don’t have all hundreds of devices currently available on the market in our test labs. What our QAs can do is test on a number of different devices with different OS versions which we already did.

If anybody can help us reproduce the issue I will greatly appreciate that. Until we reproduce it there is little we can do.

Anton,
I see this thread is from March.

I download the version on your web site last week (around 8/1).  I have a Samsung i760.
Voice command was working fine before the download as I use it just about every day.

After running Pocket Mechanic (I did both clean disk, defrag and registry clean), MS voice command no longer works.

It will take me a while to reconfigure if I have to hard reset, so I’m hoping you’ve made some progress in identifying this problem.  I’m guessing that the code must be worked to not delete some registry setting.  If I was away of the registry setting, I could reset it by hand, and a fix to PM would prevent it in the future.

What’s the current status?
Thanks
Bill

Bill again.

I see that the last thread from you was 7/30, so maybe you have not made progress on this.

If you have a Samsung i760, give it a try.
Note that I have WM version 6.  It might be that V5 does not show the problem - maybe this is why you have not reproduced it.

Thanks
Bill

I have also experienced the registry cleaner disabling voice command.  I am using a CDMA HTC Touch Diamond with WM 6.1.  Has this issue been resolved in version 2.97?
