How Does ‘Move Folders’ Work?

I used PM to relocate the My Documents folder to my card.  It looks like the data was copied over, but when I make changes to the files on my desktop (or even add/delete files), the changes are synchronized to the MyDocuments folder on the machine, but not to the folder on the card.

Have I misunderstood the purpose of the utility?  If all it is doing is copying files, I’m not clear on why registry updates are needed and what the utility does, exactly.

Sorry to be such a pain, but I’m just trying to get my head around how all this works.

Thanks!

Helloooooo…

Anyone?

Hi Robert,

Sorry for not responding earlier.

During relocation besides copying files the pocket pc is also searched for links to the old location of the files being copied. Such links could exist in the registry, shortcut files, data files etc. When found they are updated to point to the new location. For instance if you have an application that keeps a MRU (most recently used) list of files and these files get relocated the MRU list will be seamlessly updated with the new locations.

The built-in file synchronization always uses \My Documents. That has little to do with relocation which is moving files, applications or data across storage cards/RAM.

Hope this helps.

Anton, thanks again for your reply.

So if I understand you correctly, unlike the mail relocation, this is a utility that needs to be run periodically.  I guess the question is if a previously moved file that is synchronized again will point to the card, or if it will go back to My Documents.

For example, I use eWallet.  If that file is moved from the device to the card and I syncrhonize again, will it then update to the card, or will I have two copies of the file, one on the machine and the other on the card?

Thanks!

In the case you are describing the correct way to relocate eWallet would be to move your wallet files to your storage card and then configure synchronization to use the files on the storage card. Pocket Mechanic will move the files correctly but cannot change desktop application settings (ActiveSync).
