I have seen registry hacks recommended over at XDA-dev to move the message store off to a storage card.  Their procedure is to The Key in WM6 is to navigate in the registry and find:
HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
then add: “PropertyPath” value="\Storage Card\Mail” datatype="string"

I would like to know if this is better, worse, or about the same as using the ‘relocate’ function in PMP, and whatever the answer, what the implications are for other utilities that use the message store like FlexMail and other utilities.

Part of the reason I’m asking is because I have been ‘bitten’ by the IPM.SRroot bug and wonder if this might have something to do with it.

I cannot comment on the method you are describing because I am not aware of it. I doubt changing a registry key will also move existing files and folders, can you confirm if that is true? Pocket Mechanic relocates software and data by moving the belonging files and folders, updating the registry, the AppMgr files, shortcuts etc. This is a very reliable process that works on every device and is compatible with any CE software.

Pocket Mechanic cannot move database volumes as this is a limitation of Windows CE. Therefore the SMS store and CEMAIL.VOL cannot be moved on a storage card. Mail relocation moves the message bodies (text) and attachments only.

Just to be clear, then, you’re saying that we only need to run this ONCE and it completely restructures the machine, and it does not need to be run again, correct?

The registry hack does seem to work, at least from what I can see.  If you apply the hack the OS will create a folder with a numeric reference between brackets {#####...} on the card, and contained therein is another folder for attachments.  However, I don’t know what the long-term effect might be and whether all programs that rely on the subsystem will function properly.

Glad to know the PM utility is more robust.  I pretty much thought that would be the case.

1) Is there any danger in running the utility a 2nd time?

2) I have a ‘My Documents’ folder on my SDHC card also.  Using the ‘move folders’ to relocate ‘My Documents’ to the storage card gives a warning that the folder will be overwritten.  Will the existing contents (TomTom maps, etc.) be erased or will the data be combined?

Hi Robert,
There is no danger running the relocation module as many times as you wish. When you move your My Documents folder from RAM to storage card it will merge with the My Documents folder on the SD card. Only files that exist in both folders will be overwritten. By the way I don’t recommend relocation the My Documents folder at all, it is too tightly attached to the OS and hard coded in many applications.
