Ok we receive abusive message often but since I took my time to personally respond to this one I wanted to share it with the remaining users:

Thanks for your message. I don’t think we are idiots at least my own 20 years of expertise in the field tells me we are not.

Although storage cards do not have movable parts they still benefit from defragmentation because:

1) Storage card memory is not RAM. Storage cards are always accessed in blocks of several kilobytes. So to read even 1 byte you have to read the entire block. When files are contiguous access is faster because they are block aligned. If you have a 3K file that occupies 6 clusters 512 bytes each in different locations on the card the block driver will have to read 6 blocks from the memory card. If the file is contigious all blocks will likely be read in one single block.

2) Fragmented file systems cannot be easily recovered with data recovery software. It is a good idea to keep your files defragmented in case anything bad happens and you decide to undelete files or scandisk the storage card.

So with all my respect to the posts you mentioned I do not think we are such an idiots you are making us look like.

How Does ‘Move Folders’ Work?

I used PM to relocate the My Documents folder to my card. It looks like the data was copied over, but when I make changes to the files on my desktop (or even add/delete files), the changes are synchronized to the MyDocuments folder on the machine, but not to the folder on the card.

Have I misunderstood the purpose of the utility? If all it is doing is copying files, I’m not clear on why registry updates are needed and what the utility does, exactly.

Sorry to be such a pain, but I’m just trying to get my head around how all this works.

Relocating Message Store

I have seen registry hacks recommended over at XDA-dev to move the message store off to a storage card. Their procedure is to The Key in WM6 is to navigate in the registry and find:
HKLMSystemInboxSettings
then add: “PropertyPath” value=”\Storage Card\Mail” datatype=“string”

I would like to know if this is better, worse, or about the same as using the ‘relocate’ function in PMP, and whatever the answer, what the implications are for other utilities that use the message store like FlexMail and other utilities.

Part of the reason I’m asking is because I have been ‘bitten’ by the IPM.SRroot bug and wonder if this might have something to do with it.

IPM.root / IPM.SRroot

Can anyone comment on how to fix the IPM.root (also IPM.SRroot) folder bug using Pocket Mechanic? It’s a CE issue, but I was hoping that someone might be able to address a fix within the confines of PM.

Many users have this problem. In my case, have a folder (IPM.SRroot) that appears during every synchronization. While it is not debilitating, it is very annoying and raises a concern for whether or not other problems might arise later.

Werner Ruotsalainen discusses a fix for this problem using SK Tools, but I already own PM, so I’d like to use what I have. Better yet, if this fix was included as an option in one of the existing utilities for the next version of PM, that would be great!

License Expiry on registered product

For some strange reason my version of PM Pro has started saying that the “trial version has expired”.

i’ve tried contacting Wizcode support but i’m not had a response to either of my support tickets so i thought i’d try here ...

if i try putting my license key in again .... i have no way of “entering” the key ...

the screen seems to have an option to “unregister” the product ... but the button is inactive !

Any ideas welcome…. Andy

Defrag the main ram

When I choose to defrag, the only selections I get are the storage card and bluetooth. How can I defrag the main memory of the unit. Tilt/Kaiser 4550. thanks

Can’t reinstall Pocket Mechanic

This is driving me crazy. I previously had Pocket Mechanic installed on the storage card of my iMate Jasjar. I then tried to install the newer version over the top. It said it couldn’t uninstall the old version and did I want to proceed anyway. I said yes and chose install to Storage Card. The install process started then stopped saying “Anton Tomov Pocket Mecahnic” cannot be installed.

I then tried installing to the device itself, but that failed with the same message. There is plenty of space for installation on both the storage card and the device. I’ve followed the instructions for manual uninstall and deleted the folders from the installs on both the storage card and the device. It sill won’t install. I’ve even tried a restart on the device but that also made no difference. Can anyone shed any light on a fix for this.

BTW I’ve tried this with both the WM5 cab file and the WM5 desktop installer with identical results.
