Wizcode announces Defragment Mobile beta

February 18th 2009 - Wizcode LLC annoucned the public beta of Wizcode Defragment Mobile, storage card and RAM defragmenter and optimizer for Windows Mobile.

Wizcode Defragment Mobile can defragment files and folders on the storage card of your Windows Mobile device and optimize folder performance by re-sorting the directory entries of each folder. You will notice dramatically increased perfomance especially in applications that list a large number of files like file explorers, image viewers etc. Zero fragmentation is also essential for any data recovery procedures you may attempt

The new Defragment Mobile is based on previously announced Evolution framework and the Wizcode FATFS library.

Below is the summary of features in the current version:

    * Check fragmentation - will report the summary file and folder fragmentation and will optionally report directory entry sorting issues.

    * Defragment - eleminates file and folder fragmentation, improves overall storage card performance.

    * Sort directory entries - by keeping the folder contents sorted there can be a significant gain in performance/start up of many applications that sort file lists internally.

    * Defragment service - automatically defragment storage cards when the device is rebooted.

    * Exclusive card access - storage cards are now locked when being defragmented which virtually removes the possibility of a conflict with another application trying to access the storage card meanwhile.

    * RAM optimization - heap defragmentation and optimization will also reclaim unused RAM from running applications.

    * Error checking - volumes will be checked for errors before defragmentation (can be turned off although not recommended)

The public beta of Wizcode Defragment Mobile can be downloaded here:

    * Windows Mobile 2003 device .CAB file

    * Windows Mobile 5 devices .CAB file

Wizcode Data Recovery

I am happy to announce that we’ve made significant progress with our new data recovery application. So far we have fully implemented and tested:

1. ScanDisk - repairs logical FAT errors, recovers lost cluster chains, fixes directory entry problems. Checks for bad sectors and recovers data from bad sectors.

2. Undelete - recovers deleted files from storage cards.

We are in the process of implementing the 3rd module:

3. Unformat - recovers files from formatted / severely damaged volumes.

The beta will be released in days. Stay tuned!

I have a HTC Touch running WM 6.1. I really like the new user interface on Data Recovery. I am having the same issue with Data Recovery that I have with Pocket Mechanic Pro. It detects errors on my memory card but does not fix them. What I see on the memory card using file explorer or on my PC with Active Sync is bogus file directory entries on the memory card. The files have bad names, bad creation dates, and sizes that make no sense. The files in question do not really exist. What happens when I run ScanDisk is it shows 8 files with “Invalid EOC” but later says “Failed to fix corrupted chain”. It finishes sometime later and says “No Bad Sectors Found”. When I try to delete these file entries Windows tells me they can not be deleted. Does anyone know what I need to do to get these bogus file directory entries deleted? The good news is they do not cause any problems other than looking silly.

Thank you,
Dennis

ScanDisk, Undelete, Unformat, Defragment as separate applications?

Hello everybody,
Do you think it will be a good idea besides having these modules packages in the same application to release them as separate applications only? We see at least two reasons for that:

1. Lower price - I am assuming everybody will pay $10 or less for a powerful application such as undelete in case you don’t need the entire functionality of Data Recovery Mobile.

2. Lower application size, faster startup, less memory requirements.

We have already started work on Pocket Mechanic v3, based on our Evolution framework and we will release it in about 45 days. However the price of Pocket Mechanic is a bit high (there are years of work in it) and all features are not always needed so if there is a requirement we can move some of the modules to smaller applications with a very competitive price and market them that way.

Your honest opinion is very welcome.

Anton
